At Outdoor Wilderness Living School (OWLS) it is our mission to awaken children and young adults to the beauty and value of the natural world, while giving them the skills, not only to survive, but to thrive in nature.

We feel that kids in the modern world are missing a crucial aspect in their lives- nature connection. At OWLS we connect kids and nature through indigenous survival skills, nurturing a love and appreciation for the natural world.

Through more than ten years of experience running kids programs, we have built a unique program encompassing many skills, such as building natural shelters, hand and bow-drill fire-starting, edible and medicinal plants (ethnobotany), stalking wildlife, craftwork such as basket making and hide tanning, and many other skills. We feel that kids learn best when they are having fun, so our teaching style is geared toward passion based learning with lots of games and playing. We offer our special Classroom in the Woods programs to public and private school groups, home-schoolers, and nonprofit groups such as the Boy Scouts. We also offer a limited number of summer camps.

I grew up just outside a ghost town in rural Mississippi where storytelling is a favorite form of entertainment. I spent my childhood exploring the piney woods, inventing characters, and creating tiny worlds out of acorns, rocks, sticks and moss. Now, I live with my husband, children, and Pupper, who just happens to closely resemble the character of Percy in the book, in Greenville, South Carolina, where I write next to a window overlooking the woods. I am also a lawyer with Wyche, PA., whose lawyers have worked to preserve over 100,000 acres of land for future generations. I graduated from Millsaps College and Yale Law School, and also founded Outdoorosity.org, a resource celebrating the treasures and curiosities of nature with stories, know-how and inspiration to get readers outside. My debut novel, Smack Dab in the Middle of Maybe, published by Random House Children’s Books, is available for pre-order now.
